- Kineticor and Pembina will partner to develop the Greenlight Electricity Centre (GLEC), which will combine a power plant and data centre in Alberta.
- The project aims to generate 1,800 MW and meet growing energy demands from Alberta’s expanding data centre industry.
- GLEC supports Alberta’s goal to attract $100 billion in data centre investments by 2030 while integrating emissions-reduction solutions.
Kineticor Asset Management LP and Pembina Pipeline Corporation partnered to develop the Greenlight Electricity Centre (GLEC), a significant energy project in Alberta. The project combines an electricity generation plant and a data centre complex to meet the growing demand from Alberta’s data industry.
The project’s first phase could generate up to 1,800 MW. Pembina holds a 50% stake in Greenlight LP, which manages the development. The project will unfold in modular phases, each producing about 450 MW. The data centre complex will match the plant’s capacity with 1,800 MW.
GLEC will operate in Alberta’s “Industrial Heartland,” which is near transmission lines, energy infrastructure, and fibre optic connections. The site also offers carbon sequestration options, aligning with environmental goals.
Kineticor brings experience managing the 900 MW Cascade Power Plant near Edson, Alberta. Pembina plans to use its Alliance Pipeline network to supply natural gas to the plant. Stu Taylor, Senior Vice President at Pembina, emphasised the partnership’s potential to incorporate emissions-reduction solutions through Alberta’s upcoming carbon network.
Kineticor CEO Andrew Plaunt pointed out that the site’s ample space and strong electrical grid will support Alberta’s growing data centre industry. GLEC advanced to phase 3 of the interconnection process with the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) and continues progressing in design, permitting, and contracting.
The plant will supply energy directly to on-site data centres or connect to Alberta’s grid to meet broader electricity demand. GLEC has already initiated discussions with potential clients interested in setting up data centres at the site or signing long-term power agreements.
Alberta’s government seeks to attract $100 billion in data centre investments by 2030. The Kineticor-Pembina partnership aligns with this goal by providing reliable, scalable energy solutions for data centres.
This project supports Alberta’s broader economic objectives. GLEC will drive growth in Alberta’s data infrastructure by offering flexible energy solutions. The development aims to serve as a model for future data centre projects across the province.
In summary, the Greenlight Electricity Centre stands poised to play a vital role in Alberta’s efforts to expand its data industry. Kineticor and Pembina’s strong partnership positions the project to meet energy and data demands while advancing the province’s economic and environmental goals.
