KK Wind Solutions Expands into Green Hydrogen

  • KK Wind Solutions supplies customised Power Units for Sunfire’s 100 MW green hydrogen electrolyser to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Building on a 10 MW pilot, KK Wind delivers 10 units and full support for its largest green hydrogen project.

KK Wind Solutions, a €1 billion company owned by A.P. Moller Holding, is entering the green hydrogen market by leveraging its leading expertise in power converter systems for renewable energy. The company will supply a custom-designed Power Supply Unit (PSU) for Sunfire’s 100 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser, marking its largest PSU order for a hydrogen project to date.

The electrolyser will convert renewable electricity into green hydrogen, a clean energy carrier that can be stored and used in hard-to-electrify industrial sectors. This aligns with KK Wind Solutions’ mission to drive a sustainable future through innovative energy solutions.

KK Wind Solutions has engineered the PSU specifically to meet Sunfire’s requirements, ensuring high efficiency and low operational costs. Each PSU will include a transformer, rectifier, AC connections, and a cooling unit, delivering the precision and reliability needed for industrial-scale hydrogen production.

“As a leading manufacturer of power converters and control systems for the wind industry, and with strong backing from our long-term owner, we have the technology and expertise to support the green hydrogen sector,” said René Balle, Chief Commercial Officer at KK Wind Solutions. “This project deepens our partnership with Sunfire and highlights the value of customised solutions tailored to specific electrolyser and grid needs.”

This latest collaboration builds on KK Wind Solutions’ previous success with Sunfire. In 2023, the company delivered two 5 MW Power Supply Units to support Sunfire’s 10 MW pilot electrolyser. Lessons learned from that initiative played a key role in scaling up to the current 100 MW project.

Under the new contract, KK Wind Solutions will deliver 10 Power Supply Units, each rated at 10 MW. The company will also provide comprehensive support throughout the project lifecycle, including engineering, installation supervision, commissioning, and maintenance.

With over 25 years of power conversion expertise and over 30,000 units delivered to the wind energy sector, KK Wind Solutions is well-positioned to scale reliable and efficient power solutions for the emerging green hydrogen industry. The company’s production facilities exceed 15 GW in annual output, underscoring its ability to meet growing demand for decarbonisation technologies.

The Power Supply Units will play a vital role in converting AC electricity from the grid into DC power used to operate electrolysers, which split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This capability is crucial in accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen as a climate-neutral energy source.

Based in Germany and Switzerland, Sunfire leads the global electrolysis market with advanced pressurised alkaline and solid oxide (SOEC) technologies. The company develops industrial-scale solutions to produce renewable hydrogen and syngas, enabling energy-intensive sectors to move away from fossil fuels. With over 650 employees, Sunfire continues to pioneer innovation in clean hydrogen production.

This milestone project represents a significant step for KK Wind Solutions as it diversifies its offerings and contributes to the growing green hydrogen ecosystem.
