- The Korean Government will provide funding for mini-grids deployment in Nigeria
- Project development is expected to begin in April 2022
Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Kim Young-Chae, on Monday stated that Korea would provide US$12.4 million for the construction of mini-grids in Nigeria. This was made known at the “Stand-alone mini-grid project” presentation ceremony in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) organised the event in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Energy, ILJIN Electrical, S/D Powernics and Korea Polytechnic University.
Speaking at the event, Kim emphasised that the project will meet the rising energy demand of rural communities. “It involves the construction of mini-grids in non-electrified rural communities near Abuja, to ensure a stable supply of power, installation of transmission and distribution lines, supply of electrical equipment and systems and training for the operation and maintenance of mini-grids.”
Sen. Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, commended the Korean government for the initiative and advised that the project be extended to other parts of the country.
Kim further mentioned that the project would begin designing in April 2022 and extend until December 2024.
