Kuwait Finances Waste to Biogas Units in Egypt

  • Kuwait’s national bank has provided a $95,000 grant to construct waste to biogas facilities in Egypt.
  • The facilities will provide a continuous source of clean energy.
  • About 61 units will be constructed in Egypt’s Suhag governorate.

The National bank of Kuwait is providing E£1.5 million (over $95,700) to the Bioenergy for Sustainable Rural Development Company to develop a waste-to-biogas project in Egypt’s Suhag governorate. Under the National Rural Village Development Project in Egypt, the Company will deploy 61 biogas units, including 57 units to convert household waste, three for agricultural schools, and a mobile educational unit installed at Suhag University. The grant will enable the company to carry out site drilling and preparation for the fermentation of organic waste. Bioenergy will also provide technical supervision of the project in Suhag.

The units are expected to serve as a secure and continuous source of renewable energy for domestic consumption and help dispose of waste and improve the environmental conditions of the communities. The facilities will also help to produce fertilisers that would be used to improve soil quality. This project comes after a successful similar project in the Minya governorate in Upper Egypt. Minya currently has 60 biogas units in different villages.

The Egyptian Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, notes that projects such as these will improve citizens’ quality of life through “sustainable energy sources” and will support the Presidential initiative efforts towards a′ a dignified life ′for all Egyptians’.
