Kuwait opens its first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import facility in the country and largest in the Middle East. The Al Zour LNG facility is designed to import as much as 22 million tons of LNG annually.
LNG analyst at BloombergNEF Abhishek Rohatgi says, ”Gas demand in Kuwait is set to rise in the power sector due to the planned phase-out of oil plants worth 10 gigawatts,”. Kuwait, one of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) biggest oil producers, imports gas for its domestic consumption.
Kuwait has entered into a 15-year contract with state-owned Qatar Petroleum to buy 3 million tons of LNG annually for the Al Zour LNG facility. In addition to the Qatar contract, Kuwait plans to buy another 3.5 million tons of LNG annually from other suppliers.
