Lagos Pushes Clean Mobility and Safety Reforms in Transport Sector

  • Lagos is scaling CNG buses, widening funding access with banks, and reducing commuter costs, with 20 new CNG buses and additional 50-seater units already deployed.
  • The state is enforcing stronger safety measures, including mandatory substance-abuse tests and free corrective glasses for affected truck drivers, with NARTO pledging full cooperation.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to modernising the transport and logistics sector through clean energy, improved safety standards, and expanded financing for operators. Officials made the statement during a meeting on Wednesday, November 26, with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).

Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, highlighted achievements under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration. He said the state is accelerating the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles as part of its clean mobility agenda.

Giwa said the government is working with banks to expand funding for transport operators, calling the move “transformational.” He noted that the Presidential Initiative on CNG has already delivered 20 buses to Lagos, including new 50-seater units, and three LPC buses received three months ago. He added that the new buses have cut commuting costs by at least 30 per cent.

Senior Special Assistant on Transportation and Logistics, Hassan Adekoya, emphasised the administration’s focus on safety. He said the state now requires mandatory substance-abuse tests for all truck drivers. Drivers with vision problems will also receive government-sponsored corrective eyeglasses.

Kayode Okunowo, Chairman of the NARTO Lagos State branch, praised the government’s initiatives and pledged the association’s cooperation to create a safer and more efficient logistics system.

The meeting also included directors from the Ministry of Transportation, the Senior Special Assistant on Transport, Education and Innovation, and members of NARTO.
