Lagos Restores Power to Badagry Communities

  • Lagos State Electrification Agency has completed a 33kV power distribution project to restore electricity to border communities in Badagry.
  • Officials say the infrastructure will boost economic activities and strengthen security in Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa communities.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Electrification Agency, Kamaldeen Balogun, announced on Sunday that the state has completed critical 33KV power infrastructure in the Badagry West Local Council Development Area. Specifically, this newly installed network serves the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa communities to boost local economic activities and strengthen regional security.

Previously, vandalism of the distribution network severely disrupted the electricity supply to these border communities for several years. Consequently, these prolonged outages stifled small businesses, reduced employment opportunities, and compromised community safety.

In response, the Lagos State Government conducted a comprehensive technical assessment of the 37.7km Gbaji–Seme Expressway and Owode–Apa Road. Following this evaluation, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the full rehabilitation of the damaged infrastructure under the state’s THEMES+ agenda.

Technically, the project involved restoring the entire 33KV distribution network and installing new high-tension and low-tension concrete poles. Furthermore, engineers replaced vandalised conductors and constructed three high-voltage distribution towers across the Gbaji Lagoon. Additionally, the agency rehabilitated and installed 51 power distribution transformer substations across the affected areas.

Meanwhile, Balogun described the project as a testament to the government’s commitment to inclusive development. “This project clearly shows the government’s resolve to ensure that no community is left behind,” he stated. Similarly, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted during the project unveiling on Wednesday that the intervention aims to improve the quality of life for thousands of residents.

The successful restoration of the power grid provides a reliable electricity supply to the corridor. The state government expects a significant revitalisation of socio-economic growth within these vital border towns.
