Lagos state has unveiled an updated climate change action plan.
- The plan focuses on three main areas that threaten the state’s 2050 net-zero ambitions.
- The state plans to implement several initiatives, especially in the transport, energy and waste management sectors, to meet its targets.
Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled a Climate Change Action Plan for the state. The plan will develop a strategy to address the impact of climate change in the state. While speaking at the State’s eighth Climate Change Summit, the governor stated that the plan aligns with the targets and goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. He added that the state intends to implement several projects to address climate change and accelerate its net-zero emission targets. The governor stated that the updated Climate Action Plan focuses on the three main sectors (energy, waste and transport) that threaten the state’s zero-carbon ambitions.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised the need for public transport reform to reduce vehicular emissions. The state plans to introduce low-emission public buses and rail transport and encourage private vehicles to transition to low-emission versions. In waste management, the state will introduce composting, recycling, waste-to-energy initiatives to improve waste management.
The governor added that the state’s strategy would include the rollout of off-grid solar systems for public schools, hospitals and other government facilities. The state will also encourage users of fossil fuel generators to switch to solar systems.
The governor stressed that Lagos is the first Nigerian state to develop a Climate Action Plan to achieve an emission-neutral city by 2050, making it a national leader in climate action.
