The UK’s largest and “most advanced” electric vehicle (EV) charging station has opened. InstaVolt has launched the new Superhub in Winchester, Hampshire. It is near the A34 and junction 9 of the M3. The site has 44 “ultra-rapid” chargers, making it the largest of its kind in the country.
An on-site solar farm and “cutting-edge” battery storage will power the facility, which InstaVolt said will improve reliability. Delvin Lane said the site allows drivers to charge quickly and confidently.
Lane said the new station is more than “just a charging hub”. He called it a “flagship site,” setting a new standard for ultra-rapid EV charging. He added, “We are redefining what EV drivers can expect. Charging will be seamless, ultra-rapid, and future-proofed. This makes the switch to electric easier, faster, and more accessible than ever.”
Zapmap reported that at the end of February, there were over 75,000 EV charging points across the UK, located at 38,000 sites. However, the AA said charging at a hub still costs more per kilowatt hour than at home overnight.
The Basingstoke-based company designed the new site to fit many types of vehicles. It has accessible bays and spaces for larger vehicles. The site also has 870 solar panels and batteries to store power.
“This site marks a milestone in innovation. We are generating our own renewable energy for the first time,” Lane said. “This pushes the boundaries of sustainability and self-sufficiency in EV charging.”
The development also has a Starbucks cafe, a children’s play park, a dog-walking area, and 24/7 toilet facilities. This makes it a convenient stop for travellers.
