Leading Geothermal Energy Producers Worldwide

The future of global energy consumption lies in clean energy production and usage. Data from the ThinkGeoEnergy report indicated that geothermal energy production globally reached a capacity of 16,873 MW in 2024.

The report showed that 35 countries worldwide produce geothermal energy. One of these countries is Kenya, which is the leading producer in Africa.

However, of the 16,873 MW produced globally, 93 per cent of geothermal power capacity comes from Kenya and nine other countries, the top producers globally.

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) Managing Director and CEO Eng Peter Njenga said the global recognition in Geothermal development has strengthened Kenya and earned the company’s trust in markets across Africa and beyond.

“As a result, KenGen is now exporting its geothermal knowledge and technical know-how to support energy development in other countries, helping to shape a cleaner, more reliable energy future for the continent,” Eng Njenga.

The CEO noted that the company is steadily expanding its footprint beyond electricity generation by exploring new business opportunities that tap into our rich experience and technical expertise, for sustainable growth, both locally and across borders.

List of top 10 geothermal producers

1. United States (US)

The United States of America (USA) produces 3,937 MW of geothermal energy. According to the report, the U.S. continues to lead globally in geothermal installed capacity.

2. Indonesia

Indonesia has a geothermal energy installation capacity of 2,653 MW. The Indonesian government added Sorik Marapi Unit 5, Salak, and Lahendong expansions to enhance the production capacity.

7. Mexico

Mexico produces a geothermal energy capacity of 976 MW. The country undertook minor updates and confirmations to align with current trends in the geothermal sector.

8. Italy

Italy produces geothermal energy with an installed capacity of 916 MW.

9. Iceland

The geothermal energy installed capacity in Iceland is 786 MW and includes expansions like Reykjanes.

10. Japan

Japan closes the list of top ten countries with a geothermal energy production capacity of 601 MW. The country boasts projects like Appi, Suginoi, and Minami-Kayabe, adding to its capacity.
