Fake LEC employee nabbed by LNP

The Liberia National Police (LNP) have arrested a suspect who posed as an employee of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC). The suspect who approached unsuspecting residents claimed to be a Customer Service Linesman. He attempted to collect money from residents promising to install electrical poles.
The suspect was apprehended after he duped a resident of $780. The victim had approached the LEC to install a new transformer in his community but was advised that, the installation would require additional electrical poles. It was at this point, the victim was approached by the suspect who promised to install the poles after the payment of money by the victim. The suspect was apprehended when he failed to deliver the poles after collecting money from the victim.
Electricity theft and fraud have been on the increase in Liberia with perpetrators and syndicates posing as staff of the electricity companies. In response to this, the government has enacted the Power Theft Act with punishments ranging from imprisonment to fines.
