- Liberia owes $9 million in debt to Cote d’Ivoire.
- The Senate blames regulatory failure for debt accumulation
The Liberian government owes the member state of the West African Power Pool (WAPP), Cote d’Ivoire, at least $9 million in arrears for electricity supplied. Senate Pro-Tempore Albert T. Chie disclosed that Cote d’Ivoire refuses further electricity trade until the debt is paid.
Chie noted that the Grand Gedeh and Maryland counties have continuously defaulted on payment for electricity supplied, with only Nimba county making payments for electricity supplied. He blamed the past and present Liberian administrations for failing to put in place adequate regulatory measures in the sector to prevent debt accumulation.
Due to indebtedness, Liberia has stalled signing up for the West African Power Pool (WAPP) network while other countries, including Sierra Leone and Guinea, have signed up to the regional body.
