Simon Freeman responds to the President’s national address
- Calls for the privatization of LEC
- Says LEC continues to underperform
Liberia’s opposition Leader, Simon Freeman in response to President George Weah’s State of the Nation Address, has called for the privatization to the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
Mr Freeman has stated, the LEC which receives huge funding, continues to perform poorly leaving Liberians without access to electricity. He said, “Last year, the President’s Executive Order on the Liberia Electricity Corporation granted exclusion for GST on generation, transmission, distribution, materials, equipment and fuel. This did not translate to availability of electricity, neither did it translate to drop in the price”.
He, however, advised that the privatization of these utilities not be, handed over to foreign companies.
While calling for privatization, Mr Freeman offered the services of the opposition party Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) for free. “To achieve this in the interest of the Liberian people, the MPC avails itself and its services free or charge to enable the anticipated outcome of these institutions” he said.
