Lyten Acquires Europe’s Largest BESS Plant from Northvolt

  • Lyten acquired Northvolt’s BESS facility in Gdańsk, adding up to 10 GWh of scalable capacity and securing orders through 2026.
  • It will restart operations immediately to supply safer, high-density lithium-sulfur batteries for the European market.

U.S.-based Lyten, a global leader in lithium-sulfur battery technology, has acquired Northvolt’s Dwa ESS battery energy storage operations in Gdańsk, Poland. The move marks Lyten’s formal entry into the European market and secures Europe’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility.

The 25,000-square-meter (270,000-square-foot) site, formerly part of Northvolt Systems, includes manufacturing and research capabilities and has an existing production capacity of up to 6 GWh annually, scalable to over 10 GWh. The plant, which became operational in 2023, is powered by renewable energy and has secured customer orders through 2026.

While financial terms remain undisclosed, Lyten said the acquisition strengthens its ability to meet surging European demand for energy storage amid the region’s push for clean energy and grid resilience.

“Northvolt’s BESS operations are world-class and a perfect strategic fit as we enter this exciting new chapter,” said Dan Cook, CEO and Co-Founder of Lyten. “We will immediately restart operations and fulfil existing and new customer orders from this world-class facility.”

Cook also highlighted strong support from Polish and Gdańsk officials, crediting the region’s engineering talent and proximity to global shipping routes at the Port of Gdańsk as key advantages.

Meanwhile, Lars Herlitz, Lyten’s Chairman and Co-Founder, added that European customers are increasingly demanding localised supply chains free from geopolitical risk. “Gdańsk is the perfect location to meet this growing need,” he said.

Furthermore, Robert Chryc-Gawrychowski, CEO of Northvolt Poland, welcomed the development, noting that Lyten’s focus on lithium-sulfur technology continues Northvolt’s original mission of sustainable battery development in Europe.

Lyten’s batteries replace nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite with locally abundant materials. It’s exciting that this purpose-built factory will continue operating with new, forward-looking technology,” he said.

In addition, the Gdańsk facility acquisition follows Northvolt’s divestment of its Northvolt Systems unit in late 2024 amid a strategic review and bankruptcy proceedings. In April 2025, Scania acquired the industrial segment of the business.

Gdańsk Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz welcomed Lyten’s investment, a testament to the city’s growing competitiveness on the global innovation map. She also said the deal would open doors to energy innovation hubs and R&D partnerships with local universities.

Lyten’s lithium-sulfur batteries are already used in drones and the International Space Station and have been selected for Chrysler’s Halcyon concept EV. These batteries are lightweight, cost-effective, and perform across wider temperature ranges with improved safety compared to traditional lithium-ion chemistries.

The BESS market is currently the fastest-growing segment in the battery industry, driven by surging demand from AI-powered data centres, grid stabilisation efforts in Europe and North America, and growing power needs in emerging markets.

In December, Lyten secured a $650 million letter of interest from the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM) to support its battery manufacturing expansion and BESS supply to developing countries.
