- The Malagasy authorities are inaugurating the Farahantsana hydroelectric power station.
- The plant feeds its production into Madagascar’s national electricity grid.
Madagascar, is about to launch the Farahantsana hydroelectric power facility. The facility, which is situated in the Analamanga region’s Mahitsy commune, was opened by Andry Rajoelina, president of the Malagasy Republic, on December 1st, 2022. Tozzi Green, an Italian business with its headquarters in Ravenna, is handling the project, which is currently in its operational phase.
The Société de construction et de bâtiment (SCB) and Sogea Satom, a division of the French company Vinci, are just two of the businesses that Tozzi Green has entrusted with managing the building site. These businesses constructed four 2,500 mm diameter penstocks, an intake, a grit chamber, a feeder canal, and a run-of-river dam on the Ikopa River.
The facility provides 6% of Madagascar’s installed capacity. According to Power Africa, Madagascar’s installed capacity (844 MW) was used on average in 2018, with a 350 MW peak demand. Over 20% of this electricity is produced by small hydroelectric units, which are the primary hydro source.
The Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons of Madagascar has granted permission for Tozzi Green to build the Farahantsana hydroelectric facility. The electricity generated under this public-private partnership (PPP) is sold to the government-run utility Jiro sy Rano Malagasy (JIRAMA). Electricity is sold for seven cents per kWh.
According to the company led by Roberto Fagnocchi, its plant can produce 135 GWh of electricity per year, enough to meet the needs of 2.7 million Malagasy, or 65% of the capital’s population Tananarive. The project, launched in 2018, required an investment of 450 billion ariarys, or around 100 million euros.
