Mahindra Confirms E20 Fuel Safe for Vehicles in India

  • Mahindra says vehicles can safely use 20% ethanol-blended E20 fuel, though mileage and acceleration may slightly decrease.
  • India mandates E20 at nearly 90,000 fuel stations, with the government assuring that minor adjustments for older vehicles suffice.

Mahindra & Mahindra (MAHM.NS) confirmed on Thursday, September 11, that fuel blended with 20% ethanol (E20) is safe for vehicle use, but CEO Nalinikanth Gollagunta warned that drivers may notice reduced mileage and slower acceleration.

E20 recently became the exclusive fuel at nearly 90,000 fuel stations across India, prompting motorists to express concern about its effect on older vehicles. Gollagunta said Mahindra plans to release an advisory on E20 next week to guide customers on its use.

Motorists raised questions on social media, citing inconsistent statements from automakers regarding compatibility and performance. While carmakers initially stated that E20 had not been tested on older vehicles, they later confirmed that it is safe to use.

The Indian government maintains that concerns are unfounded and insists E20 represents the nation’s clean energy path forward. Officials noted that older vehicles may require replacement of certain rubber parts and gaskets, a process the government describes as simple.

On Thursday, September 11, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari called social media campaigns against E20 “politically motivated,” urging citizens to trust official guidance.
