Malawi Commissions New Hydropower Station

  • Malawi adds 3.4MW to the national grid.
  • Cedar Energy privately owns the hydropower station.

Malawi’s government has announced the commissioning of the Muloza hydropower station, adding 3.4MW to the national grid. The facility, owned by a private company- Cedar Energy, is expected to power over 2800 rural households in Phalombe, Mulanje and Thyolo.

The Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, at the ceremony, noted that “engaging private investors to generate power for ESCOM to complement services by Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) – under independent power producers (IPP) – is part of the government’s goal to attain 1,000MW of electricity by 2025 as recently pledged by President Lazarus Chakwera.”

In his remarks, the CEO of ESCOM, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, said the utility is receiving less power than required due to the non-availability of adequate electricity generation power producers in the country, thus their effort to engage independent power producers.
