Government to add at least 500MW to existing grid capacity
- Invests in electricity projects
- Projects to be completed in four years
Malawi to benefit from several electricity projects in the next four years, the government says. President Lazarus Chekwara made this known when he announced the administrations plans to improve electricity generation over the next four years. He stated that his administration would add at least 500MW of generation capacity to the national grid.
”Let me say to you all here and everyone out there,….we have in the pipeline a plan to increase electricity generation and supply in the country in the short to medium term’,’ he said.
The projects to increase the country’s generation capacity will expand generation through fossil and renewable sources of energy. Some of the projects include the Salima gas (70MW), Natural Gas (100MW), Rukulu Coal project (100MW), Kammawamba Coal project ( 300MW), and the Tedzani Hydro-electric power project (19MW).
Less than 10% of Malawi’s population has access to electricity. The country plans to achieve at least 30% electricity access by 2020.
