Masdar, EDF Connects 400MW Saudi Wind Farm to the Grid

 

  • Masdar has connected the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm in Saudi Arabia to the grid.
  • The farm is the largest in the region and has a capacity of 400MW.
  • The wind farm is set to commence commercial operations next year.

EDF Renewables and Masdar have commenced power generation from their 400MW Dumat Al Jandal wind farm in Saudi Arabia. The wind farm is the first utility-scale wind park in Saudi Arabia and the largest in the Middle East. According to Masdar, the park located in the Al-Jouf region has been connected to the grid. The company says that commercial operations will commence in  Q12022.

The Dumat Al Jandal is capable of providing enough electricity to power 70,000 homes when fully operational. Masdar will sell the power from the farm to Saudi Power Procurement Company under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Masdar and EDF Renewables won the tender to develop the $500million (€425.1m) project in 2019. Both companies put in a joint bid of $21.3/MWh, which was reduced further at financial close to just $9.9/MWh. Vestas Wind Systems was selected as the turbine supplier and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. The company supplied 99 of its Vestas V150-4.2MW turbines.
