Masdar Powers Up in Spain with Major Solar Acquisition

  • Masdar acquires Valle Solar, a 234 MW solar project in Spain, with plans to add 259 MW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Strategic expansion: The acquisition aligns with Masdar’s goal of reaching 100 GW of clean energy by 2030 and strengthens its presence in Europe.
  • Hybrid energy site: Valle Solar will integrate energy storage, enhancing grid stability and supporting Spain’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Masdar, the UAE-based renewable energy company, has acquired the Valle Solar project in Spain’s Valencia region through its subsidiary, Saeta. This move strengthens Masdar’s growing presence in Europe.

Located across Ayora, Jarafuel, and Zarra, Valle Solar is one of the region’s most significant photovoltaic projects. It boasts an installed capacity of 234 megawatts (MW), with plans to add 259 MW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Genia Solar Energy and Solar Ventures, the initial developers, finalised the deal with Masdar.

Masdar continues to align its European expansion strategy to reach 100 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy capacity by 2030. Valle Solar will begin operations in early 2027, making it a key solar project in Spain. This acquisition highlights Spain’s growing role in Europe’s renewable energy development.

Several stakeholders played critical roles in the project. Watson Farley & Williams, G-advisory, EY, and Finergreen advised Genia Solar Energy and Solar Ventures on legal and financial matters. Broseta, Solida, and Pérez-Llorca provided legal counsel to Saeta.

Valle Solar will integrate energy storage solutions to create a hybrid site, enhancing the local grid’s stability. This addition will help manage solar power intermittency while improving supply security. The project aims to modernise Spain’s energy infrastructure and contribute to the country’s renewable energy targets.

This transaction showcases a collaborative model for future large-scale renewable projects in Europe. As energy transition initiatives accelerate, projects like Valle Solar demonstrate the potential for cooperation and innovation in renewable energy development.
