Chip company MediaTek and Taiwanese telco Far EasTone Telecommunications have signed two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to procure wind energy in Taiwan.

The companies have signed agreements with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to offtake from Taiwan’s Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm.

The Fengmiao 1 wind farm is being developed by Copenhagen Offshore Partners on behalf of CIP. It is planned to have a total installed capacity of 1.8 GW across all its phases.

The first corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) was signed with Taiwanese telco Far EasTone Telecommunications.

“This collaboration marks a significant step toward sustainable transformation and carbon reduction in Taiwan. Far EasTone’s commitment to this partnership highlights its dedication to sustainability and its trust in CIP’s engineering and financial expertise,” said CIP.

CIP has also signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with MediaTek, a Taiwanese semiconductor company. Under the agreement, MediaTek will purchase power from the 500MW Fengmiao offshore wind farm.

CIP was awarded capacity for the 500MW Fengmiao 1 in the first round of Taiwan’s Round 3 Zonal Development Offshore Wind Auction in 2022. Located around 35km off the coast of Taichung, Fengmiao 1 will feature 33 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15MW.

The company has secured around TWD 103 billion (US$3.1bn) in project financing from 27 international and Taiwanese banks.

Speaking on the financial close, Thomas Wibe Poulsen, partner and head of APAC at CIP, said, “Fengmiao is the first offshore wind project in Taiwan to be supported by a portfolio of corporate offtakes and will deliver much-needed clean energy to large energy users in Taiwan. This sets a new benchmark for Taiwan’s rapidly maturing offshore wind market under the government’s Energy Transition 2.0 policy.”

Fengmiao 1 is CIP’s third offshore wind project in Taiwan, following the successful construction of the Changfang & Xiadao and Zhongneng projects.
