Microsoft Signs Clean Energy PPA with Chilean Utility

  • Microsoft plans a 100% renewable power-only consumption by 2025.

Microsoft Corp and Chilean Utility, AES Andes SA, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) towards the sourcing of renewable energy for the software giant’s data centre in Chile. In an announcement by both companies, it was revealed that the supply of power will come from two projects that are currently being constructed by AES Andes. The solar-and-storage plant located in Antofagasta and a wind farm in Biobio will be the power sources from which the data center will draw renewable power.

“The project with AES Andes to use wind and solar energy is the first initiative and we are working on the other fronts,” said Sergio Rademacher, General Manager of Microsoft Chile.

Microsoft has a target of powering all its data centres completely through renewables by 2025 and plans on becoming carbon negative by 2030.
