- Minesto has been awarded a grant to improve its tidal energy generation technology.
- The company plans to use the funds to enhance its tether technology to improve performance.
Swedish marine energy developer Minesto has been awarded a SEK 5.8 million ($669,500) grant to support the commercialisation of its Deep Green tidal power generating technology. Minesto’s technology uses a kite-like device consisting of a wing carrying a turbine coupled to a generator in a nacelle, with rudders, struts and a tether connected to a bottom joint at the seabed foundation.
Minesto says that the funding which the Swedish Energy Agency provides will aid in the development of a next-generation tether system to scale up the technology for use in 3MW power plants. The improved tether system will be expected to enhance functionality and performance by improving the hydrodynamic properties and electricity transmission with low losses. The company in 2018 commissioned its first commercial-scale system in Holyhead Deep, Wales, in 2018.
Minesto recently introduced an upgraded design of the technology, the Dragon Class which it plans to feature in all ongoing projects.
