- The Moroccan government allocates 1 million hectares to green hydrogen projects.
- It aims to attract investors, starting with 300,000 hectares.
On March 11, the Moroccan government announced its plan to allocate 1 million hectares to green hydrogen projects. This begins with 300,000 hectares in the first phase, aiming to attract investors.
Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water using renewable energy, is vital for decarbonising industries. The prime minister’s office stated that Morocco seeks to play a significant role in the global energy transition.
The offer includes projects for electricity generation from renewables and electrolysis to produce green hydrogen derivatives. It mentioned incentives for investors but did not provide details.
Green hydrogen will be used for both export and domestic purposes. Around 100 investors have already shown interest in producing green hydrogen in Morocco. The country aims to increase the share of renewables to 52% of total installed capacity by 2030, up from the current 37.6%.
