- Morocco heatwave causes a spike in electricity consumption
- ONEE announced a demand peak of 6,710MW
Morocco has recorded a new electricity demand peak owing to an increase in consumption due to the heatwave in the country. The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) announced that Morocco has been experiencing a heatwave since July 5, leading to an increase in electricity consumption. As a result, electricity demand peaked at 6,710MW on July 12, a 270MW increase compared to 2020.
Earlier this week, the General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) stated that the country recorded maximum temperature spikes in several regions exceeding the average monthly temperature by 5-12 degrees. ”This scorching weather is due to the rise of a mass of dry and warm air from the south,” the DMN said.
The heatwave is expected to continue in several regions, including central Morocco, south, and south-east of the country this week.
