Morocco to Deploy 6GW of Clean Energy this Decade

Morocco wants to install 6GW of clean energy to meet its 52 per cent renewable integration target by 2030. The capacity will come from a mix of several technologies, including solar, wind, hydro and mix between solar and CSP, an official from the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) stated.

Current solar projects in the pipeline include the 800 MW NOOR Midelt 1, 800 MW Noor Midelt II, 800 MW Noor Tafilalet, 800 MW Noor PV II and 200 MW Noor ATLAS. This project will add 3,400 MW new solar capacity hen completed. In addition, Morocco will install 1,320 MW capacity of wind. The projects include the 850 MW Projet Éolien Intégré, 150 MW Projet Éolien Intégré -Taza let II, 120 MW Kouda Al Baida repowering and 200 MW Aftissat II.

Morocco is also looking to develop clean energy projects in several countries in Africa. Masen is also set to develop a hydro project in Zambia. Under the Desert to Power initiative, MASEN is partnering with the African Development Bank to mobilise public and private funds to install up to 10 GW of solar capacity across the Sahel. The country’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen project will start production in 2025.
