Morocco to Impact Global Battery Manufacturing Dominance

  • Morocco’s abundant phosphate deposits position the nation as a pivotal player in the worldwide battery supply chain.
  • Despite China’s current production dominance, the report also highlighted Morocco’s pivotal position in the global phosphate landscape.

Morocco’s abundant phosphate deposits are positioning the nation as a pivotal player in the worldwide battery supply chain; this is the argument of a recent report by Bne Intellinews. According to the report, Morocco has roughly 70 per cent of the world’s known phosphate reserves, which are crucial for fertilisers and battery production; Morocco is poised to increase its wealth significantly.

The report argued that phosphate rock is a critical ingredient in lithium iron phosphate, a crucial component for electric vehicles and energy storage batteries.“The double significance of phosphate rock highlights Morocco’s potential impact on the agriculture and EV industries,” the same source argued.

The report also highlighted Morocco’s pivotal position in the global phosphate landscape despite China’s current production dominance of 90 million tonnes in 2023.

It emphasised the Kingdom’s role as the world’s second-largest producer, with 35 million tonnes produced in 2023. The same source argued that Morocco’s substantial reserves offer a unique opportunity to expand its dominance in the phosphate supply chain, “especially given the surging demand for battery materials.”

It also underscored that Morocco’s strategic coastal location on both the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, coupled with the operational excellence of its Tanger Med Port, ideally positions the country to capitalise on its phosphate resources for the thriving fertiliser and battery markets.

This aligns perfectly with the government’s ambitious plan to transform the nation into a global battery mineral production and processing hub. Major EV battery plants have already been announced.

However, the report underscored that only “with the right strategic vision and government effort can Morocco transform its economy and emerge as a leading global player in the green technology and fertiliser markets.”

The report also highlighted Morocco’s rich mineral diversity, including significant reserves of lead, zinc, silver, cobalt, and other valuable metals. It noted that the country is a global leader in phosphate and fertiliser exports while also holding prominent positions in silver, fluorite, and barite production
