- Xlinks energy firm set to handle the interconnection project
- To enable 3.6GW renewable energy trade between both countries
A United Kingdom (UK) based energy firm, Xlinks, is set to connect Morocco and the UK for renewable energy trading. The interconnector project features four High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) underwater sea cables measuring 3,800 kilometres. The interconnection will enable the trade of at least 3.6GW of renewable energy.
The $21.9 billion Morocco-UK power project involves the construction of a 7GW solar and 3.5 GW wind generation facility in Morocco’s Guelmim Oued Noun region. The new electricity generation facility to be constructed by Xlinks would enhance renewable energy trade between both countries.
Xlinks Executive Vice-Chair, Sir Dave Lewis stated that the project would ”…harness extremely reliable solar and wind power in Morocco to deliver vital baseload power balancing and enabling our own offshore wind ambitions, while reinforcing Morocco’s renewable energy industry,”
