Morrow Batteries ASA, an industrial battery technology company, has formally commissioned a new factory for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in Norway.  This lithium-iron-phosphate battery will have an annual production capacity of 1 GWh.

This battery factory is regarded as the first gigawatt-scale factory of this type in Europe; the facility in Arendal is expected to produce up to three million battery cells annually. The site, the first of four such facilities planned by Morrow in the coastal city, will have about 150 employees.

Test production has already started, with thousands of LFP sample cells shipped to potential customers for testing and validation. Commercial manufacturing is scheduled to begin at the end of the year.

The factory’s inauguration took place earlier in August in the presence of Norway’s prime minister, Jonas Gahr Store. Morrow was established in 2020 to manufacture and supply batteries for energy storage, niche sectors, and, eventually, automotive applications. It counts among its backers ABB, Siemens, and A Energi.

In April, the company sealed a contract to deliver 5.5 GWh of LFP batteries to Nordic Batteries over seven years. The cells will assemble and manufacture battery packs and energy systems customised for maritime and demanding industrial applications.

Morrow Batteries CEO Lars Christian Bacher said, “During 2024, we have successfully advanced our preparations for the industrial scale-up of our battery production in gigawatt scale. We follow a step-wise plan, mitigating risk efficiently, and in Q3, we will open the first 1 GWh factory based on the proven LFP technology in Arendal, Norway.

“We have already shipped thousands of sample cells from our customer qualification line in Korea, and we recently announced significant improvements in the lifespan and energy density of our LFP batteries. The strategic sales agreement with Nordic Batteries, which we signed in April, demonstrates our products’ quality and industrial platform.”
