MOZAMBIQUE: Limiting Gas in Mozambique, Not Sensible – IMF Mozambique Representative

  • Limiting gas in Mozambique not sensible says IMF representative

The Mozambique Representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Alexis Meyer-Cirkel, has called the push to limit gas production in the country as ”not sensible”. In a briefing, Meyer-Cirkel stated that countries like Mozambique cannot pay for the challenges brought on by the emissions of developed countries.

“I think that this discussion, preventing Mozambique from developing this wealth, disproportionately penalises a country that has not contributed to the creation of the problem and that is a poorer country,” Meyer-Cirkel said.

Meyer-Cirkel explained that the dependence on resources by resource countries had limited their response to difficult situations like the recent pandemic. He added that African resource countries have a post-COVID19 loss prediction of 2.9% compared to non-resource countries expected to grow their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 3.8%.

The IMF has always promoted gas and other big resource projects in Mozambique.
