- Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric project to begin generating electricity in 2030
- The project will add 1500MW to the national grid
Zimbabwe’s Deputy Justice Minister, Filimao Suaze, has stated that the country’s Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric project will begin generating electricity in 2030. The project, located at the South East of Cahora Bassa Dam, is expected to add 1500MW to the national grid.
”I am confident that this dam will be built by 2025 and in 2030 will see the effective take-off of this project,” said Minister Filimao Suaze.
The Mphanda Nkuwa project aims to increase electricity transmitted through the Teemaputo line. The project, which had previously suffered implementation challenges, was relaunch in 2018 by President Filipe Nyusi. The project’s overall cost is $4.4 billion, including the cost of the construction of a transmission line.
Apart from improving supply to the national grid, the project will boost electricity exports to neighbouring Lesotho and South Africa. Successful bidders for the project will implement the project in partnership with Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa.
