President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique has inaugurated a new electrification project, which aims to connect 30 million Mozambicans to the national grid network. The project also seeks to stimulate development, and ensure that families can prosper through the productive use of electrical power.

While speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Nyusi stated that the project was an example of the government’s commitment to improving electricity access in the country through the electrification of all Mozambicans by 2030. The project involves 23km of medium voltage transmission line, a network of 14km of low voltage line, and four transformer posts. The project is located at Itepela, in the Ngauma district of the northern province of Niassa.

President Nyusi further called on Mozambicans to protect the electrical installations and reject illegal connections and energy theft. He added that new connections are free, and the consumers should report any staff seeking payment for new electricity connections. Mozambique has only 40% of its population connected to electricity, with 36% covered by the national grid and the remaining 4% covered by renewable energy sources.
