Mozambique’s 100th LNG Cargo Export Signals Economic Transformation

  • The project, led by energy major Eni, commenced operations in November 2022 and has successfully shipped the 100th LNG cargo.
  • The facility has a liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million metric tons per annum and about 2.4 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves.

Mozambique has taken a significant step forward in its journey as a global energy player with the successful shipment of the 100th cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Coral South Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility.

The project, led by energy major Eni, highlights the country’s increasing relevance in the global LNG market and the broad economic and social impact of large-scale energy investments on the African continent.

Located in the ultra-deep waters of the Rovuma Basin, the Coral South FLNG facility commenced operations in November 2022. In less than two years, it has delivered consistent LNG exports, placing Mozambique firmly on the map of top emerging LNG producers.

With a liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million metric tons per annum (MTPA), the facility taps into the vast resources of the Coral gas reservoir, which holds an estimated 2.4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.

Eni, the delegated operator for Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, has driven the project’s momentum. The milestone 100th shipment underlines Coral South’s strategic importance in supplying clean energy to global markets while ensuring the monetisation of the country’s substantial natural gas reserves.

More than just an engineering and logistics feat, the Coral South project has emerged as a catalyst for national development. It has created approximately 1,400 direct and indirect employment opportunities for Mozambicans, fostering the growth of a local skilled workforce.

In particular, over 200 young professionals have been trained in key sectors, including oil and gas production, logistics, and asset integrity—laying the groundwork for long-term sectoral sustainability and technical self-reliance.

Coral South’s impact extends well beyond energy exports. It stands as a model for how large-scale natural resource projects, aligned with local content development, can accelerate socio-economic progress in Africa. As Mozambique looks to expand its gas production footprint, the Coral South FLNG project will likely serve as both a benchmark and a springboard for further regional investment and transformation.

This achievement reinforces the narrative that when effectively managed and strategically deployed, Africa’s energy assets can power inclusive growth while playing a critical role in the global energy transition.
