- MTN Nigeria is actively involved in investing in clean energy technologies to support Nigeria in its quest to reduce emissions and reach its net-zero emissions objectives.
- MTN Nigeria has made notable progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In its 2023 Climate Change Report, MTN Nigeria disclosed collaborating with a renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) program to implement a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) power plant. This facility will provide power to MTN Plaza (their corporate office) and the main data centre located in Ikoyi.
MTN has significantly reduced its energy costs using three 1.1-megawatt gas generators. These emission reductions have resulted in significant cost savings, exceeding NGN570 million. The company has also implemented energy-efficient measures such as installing motion light sensors in buildings and switching centres to optimize power usage. Additionally, they’ve introduced a 56-kilowatt solar project, generating over 4,000 kilowatt hours of clean electricity monthly.
MTN Nigeria’s initiatives reflect the firm’s commitment to environmental sustainability and align with Nigeria’s objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and working toward a net-zero emissions future.
Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, emphasises the company’s dedication to addressing environmental challenges in Nigeria. He views investments in sustainable energy and infrastructure as essential for the nation’s future.
Nigeria’s Climate Change Act of 2021 is designed to facilitate low greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable, green growth. It establishes a framework for setting a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target between 2050 and 2070, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions in the latter part of this century. Experts recognise that transitioning to clean energy is a gradual and complex process that requires deliberate efforts to ensure ongoing improvement and sustainability.
