The firm has spent N$9 million in Otjiwarongo to electrify 800 houses since 2013.
The Central and Northern Electricity Distributor (Cenored) has announced the commencement of its peri-urban electrification scheme. The chief executive officer, Robert Kahimise made this known at the ground-breaking ceremony. It is beginning its seven phased project from the Ombili informal settlement in Otjiwarongo.
According to him, the company is committed to providing infrastructure in informal settlements. “Covid-19 continues to impact our business performance and strategy execution negatively. What you are seeing today was supposed to be done two years ago. We made losses for the year ending 2021, and now we have turned it around, and we made a profit,” said Kahimise, adding that any profit made this year will be used to electrify more houses.
Cenored, according to Kahimise, will find ways to continue serving the community, such as providing free or subsidized electricity. Previously, residents had to pay N$2 000 to join the energy grid. Residents of Ombili may now claim, “Wash and wear is history,” according to Juliana Kampungu, a beneficiary. Cenored has spent N$9 million in Otjiwarongo to electrify 800 houses since 2013.
“We will iron and wear our clothing now. As a result, our children will be able to study at night, and gender-based violence will also decrease,” said Kampungu.
