According to Johan van Straaten, general manager of Windhoek-based Furntech Agencies, city and regional councils can establish renewable energy systems in informal settlements without connecting to the national power grid. The company sells renewable solar energy systems and assists in empowering underserved regions.
The solar panel encased battery, deep freezer, and four internal and one external light were all provided by Furntech Agencies as part of the package. According to Van, “local governments may invest in these power systems because they do not require cabling. After all, each unit is a stand-alone system.”
Lilongeni Unoovene, a Furntech renewable energy representative in charge of networking, said he would like to see more renewable energy systems installed in the settlement since they increase the safety of residents who are occasionally mugged in the dark.
