- NoRED laments the increase in illegal connections
- Appeals to stakeholders for cooperation in tackling the menace
Namibia’s Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (NoRED) has stated that there has been an increase in the cases of illegal connections in the region. NoRED added that despite measures to curb illegal connections, the criminals are still carrying out illegal connections for unsuspecting consumers.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Fillemon Nakashole says the company plans to conduct a meter survey, but the restrictions due to the COVID19 pandemic has forced the utility to put the survey aside; for now, Nakashole added that the incidents of illegal connections were the highest in Opuwo in the Kunene regions. “Electricity thieving appears in various forms, such as meter tampering, the selling of illegal prepaid vouchers, and illegal electricity connections,” Nakashole said.
“This situation increases operational costs and is also unsafe for those committing the crimes and for NoRED’s staff members, who work on the installation of electricity,” Nakashole says. “We are therefore appealing to all our stakeholders to assist NoRED against this chronic disease by reporting such incidents,” he said.
NoRED has, however, arrested some culprits.
