The Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga, has launched a Green People’s Energy Initiative under the ministry’s solar revolving fund (SRF) to enhance Namibia’s renewable energy sector. The initiative is a collaboration between the German government and Namibia, implemented by GIZ.

The SRF is a loan facility designed to boost renewable energy technology deployment demand in off-grid locations, particularly for rural and metropolitan clientele. It provides subsidized loans with an annual interest rate of 5% for five years.

“The project aims to help Namibians gain universal and long-term access to electricity.” The GIZ has provided financial assistance to the tune of €330 000 to the SRF for the new funding window,” Kornelia said.

According to Namibia’s national household data, there are 235 884 rural households, 35 855 of which are linked to the grid and 18 324 of which have access to solar energy, resulting in a rural electrification rate of 20%.
