Namibia’s annual electricity generation recorded a severe reduction in the year on year comparison for May 2021. The country saw an over 50% reduction in domestic electricity generation due to the reduction of electricity generation at the Ruacana Power Station due to the increase in electricity imports.
According to Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), domestic electricity fell by 59.5% as of May 2021 due to the reduction in electricity generation at the Rudacana Power Station. The Ruacana plant recorded a decrease in electricity generation by 68.9%. The report also stated that the country recorded a 42.3% increase in electricity imports from Eskom and Zambia.
“Local production of electricity stood at 95,027MWh in May 2021 compared to 95,326 MWh produced in April 2021, while 251,119MWh of electricity was imported during the same month of 2021”, the report reads.
The country, however, recorded an increase in electricity sales owing to an increase in domestic consumption. As a result, electricity sales saw a 10.7% increase from the previous year.
