Namibia Plans $10bn Green Hydrogen Projects in January 2025

  • Hyphen Hydrogen Energy aims to become Namibia’s hub for Green hydrogen.
  • The first phase would produce 125,000 tonnes per year.
  • Namport and Port of Rotterdam will work together to build a master planning process.

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Pty) Ltd, which received preferred bidder status for a USD-10 billion (EUR 9.32 billion) green hydrogen hub project in Namibia late last year, aims for a January 2025 construction start.

As previously reported, Hyphen has been selected to build a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen production hub on 4,000 square kilometres of territory within the Tsau /Khaeb National Park. At full scale, the multi-phase project will add 5 to 6 GW of renewable energy generation capacity and 3 GW of electrolysers to produce 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen yearly. The first phase, which would produce 125,000 tonnes per year, is expected to be completed by 2026.

The government of Namibia and Hyphen have been working together to prepare pre-feasibility activities since announcing Hyphen’s selection in November 2021. The Namibian Ports Authority, popularly known as Namport, and its strategic partner, the Port of Rotterdam, will work together to build a master planning process. The master plan will concentrate on how Namport can effectively accommodate the future green hydrogen industry in southern Namibia. It will begin soon and be managed by multinational port consultancy PRDW, with Hyphen providing technical support.

Once an implementation agreement is completed, a full feasibility study for the Hyphen project will begin.
