- Walvis Bay is seeking companies to develop a waste-to-power project.
- The project is expected to reduce waste pollution in the municipality.
Walvis Bay, Namibia, is seeking interested companies to develop a waste-to-energy project in the municipality. The municipality has launched a call for expressions of interest in the project. The selected company will convert solid waste from the Walvis Bay landfill into electricity.
Biogas produced from waste fermentation will fuel a power plant whose capacity is yet to be determined. The selected company will replace Waste Power Generation, which has been in charge of the solid waste management project since 2019. The Walvis Bay municipality hopes that the project will help to reduce waste pollution.
To help control waste pollution, the Namibian government developed a waste management strategy in 2019. Under this strategy, every citizen would pay an environmental tax of N$0.5 (US$0.03) on every plastic bag used. This levy which goes to the Namibia Environmental Investment Fund is used to support waste management.
Interested participants in the Walvis Bay waste-to-energy project have until August 27th, 2021, to submit their proposals.
