- NamPower postpones electricity disconnection to March 11, 2022.
- Congo Namibia Trading’s debt has accumulated to N$29million.
- NamPower’s MD, Kahenge Simson Haulofu, says the mine is under new ownership.
Residents of Kombat village have been informed that NamPower has decided to postpone the village’s electricity disconnection. On Monday, February 28, 2022, NamPower planned to cut off the village’s electricity supply. However, the suspension has been postponed until March 11, 2022, at 9 am due to unforeseen circumstances.
The termination of the power supply agreement between NamPower and Congo Namibia Trading (Pty) Ltd, which came to an end on February 28, 2022, has resulted in the suspension of electricity supply to the village of Kombat.
Congo Namibia Trading’s decision to terminate the contract is due to its accumulated debt since July 2018, totalling over N$29 million. Congo Namibia Trading’s account has been rapidly growing, with no accountability from that entity. The village of Kombat will be impacted by the termination of the contract with Congo Namibia Trading, as Congo Namibia Trading has been supplying the town through the same supply point as the mine.
“The mine is currently under new ownership, with its power supply point,” read a statement from NamPower MD, Kahenge Simson Haulofu.
NamPower has had a Debt Collection Plan in place since March 2021, according to the MD, which has resulted in consultations with defaulting customers to reach payment agreements.
“Some customers, like Congo Namibia Trading (Pty) Ltd, have defaulted on their obligations, while others, like Congo Namibia Trading (Pty) Ltd, have not been forthcoming, and their account continues to grow exponentially,” Haulofu said.
He also urged members of the public who will be affected by the disconnection to contact their electricity service providers, Congo Namibia Trading and the Kombat Community Trust, for more information.
