- SDEE and Narada Power will deliver the 54MW/ 54MWh BESS to NamPower.
- The project aims to address the shortages in demand for power and reduce the impact of unstable power generation on the grid.
Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower) has signed major Engineering, Procurement and Construction contracts with Shandong Electrical, Engineering & Equipment Group (SDEE) and Narada Power for the country’s first grid-scale battery energy storage project. The joint venture between the two Chinese companies will deliver the 54MW/ 54MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Omburu substation in Namibia’s Erongo region.
The project aims to address the demand for power shortages, reduce the impact of unstable photovoltaic power generation on the power grid, and improve the quality of electricity residents use in the region. Furthermore, the partners claim that the Omburu project envisions a profit model of energy storage in sync with the global low-carbon energy and environmental protection goals. The BESS will feature Narada’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells.
The Managing Director of NamPower, Kahenge Haulofu, said the project will reshape how the country generates, distributes and consumes electricity, bringing substantial economic benefits to consumers. He added that it will also positively affect emergency energy management and reduce CO2 emissions. Media reports suggest that the Omburu BESS project has bagged a €20 million grant from German national development bank KfW, covering about 80 per cent of the project cost, with the rest financed by NamPower.
