NASENI: Powering Nigeria’s Leap from Innovation to Industrial Transformation

  • NASENI’s innovative projects continue accelerating Nigeria’s industrial and technological transformation, empowering communities and industries with sustainable solutions.
  • Through renewable energy, biotechnology, and agricultural innovation, NASENI is shaping the future of Nigeria’s industrial and technological advancement.

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is a key force behind Nigeria’s industrial and technological growth. Aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Agency drives progress through innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development.

Established in 1992 under the Presidency, NASENI remains the only institution focused on building an indigenous science and engineering base. Over time, it has turned research findings into real products that create jobs and strengthen the economy.

Since 2023, when Mr Khalil Suleiman Halilu became Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, NASENI has seen remarkable change. Guided by his 3Cs framework, collaboration, creation, and commercialisation, the Agency transforms ideas into market-ready technologies serving various industries nationwide.

In just two years, NASENI has launched more than forty innovative products. These include electric tricycles, solar power systems, lithium batteries, air conditioners, and locally assembled laptops. As a result, Nigeria’s local manufacturing capacity has grown, and dependence on imported technology has reduced.

NASENI is also transforming agriculture. Through its Tractor Recovery Project with the Mechanisation Equipment Company of Africa (MECA), over 375 abandoned tractors have been restored for active use on farms. The Irrigate Nigeria Project applies solar-powered pumps to support all-year farming, improve food production, and boost rural livelihoods.

The Agency’s partnership with TROMENT Nigeria Limited produced Nigeria’s first local biotechnology factory in Abuja. The facility makes rapid diagnostic kits for malaria and tuberculosis, improving access to local healthcare solutions. In the same way, NASENI’s work with IMOSE Computers promotes digital inclusion through affordable laptops and smart devices for schools and small businesses.

In renewable energy, NASENI expanded the Karshi Solar Energy Plant from 7.5MW to 50MW, making it one of the largest in West Africa. Its partnership with Portland Gas Limited and Kia Motors also established new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion and training centres. These centres promote cleaner, cheaper transport and help lower carbon emissions.

NASENI also drives research across its eleven development institutes. These centres explore materials engineering, electronics, agricultural machinery, and advanced manufacturing. Programmes like the Innovate Naija Challenge and NASENI Research Commercialisation Grant Programme (NRCGP) empower young inventors and entrepreneurs to scale their innovations.

Ultimately, NASENI is more than a research institution; it is the engine of Nigeria’s industrial and technological transformation. Through consistent innovation and collaboration, it continues to turn scientific ideas into real-world solutions that create jobs, drive growth, and build a self-reliant nation.
