- NCDMB and Butane Energy Ltd commission a 180-MT LPG Filling Plant in Kaduna, part of a joint venture to expand cleaner cooking fuel access in Northern Nigeria.
- The project aligns with Nigeria’s net-zero emissions goal by 2026 and aims to create jobs, reduce reliance on kerosene, and foster local content development.
The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Butane Energy Limited marked a significant milestone in promoting cleaner energy solutions with the commissioning of a 180-metric-tonne Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Filling Plant in Kaduna, Kaduna State, on Friday. This facility aims to make LPG a more accessible, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly cooking fuel option for Nigerians.
The Kaduna plant, the second in a series of planned LPG facilities in Northern Nigeria, follows the commissioning of a 100MT LPG Storage and Bottling Plant in Katsina State in 2021. The joint venture between NCDMB and Butane Energy intends to establish five such plants across the region, with a combined storage capacity of 1,000 metric tonnes. Another plant in Kano State is set to open in the first quarter of 2025, while construction is underway for a facility in Bauchi. Abuja is also on track to be the site for future expansion.
Felix Omatsola Ogbe, Executive Secretary of NCDMB, represented by Alhaji Abdulmalik Halilu, the Board’s Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, praised Butane Energy’s progress and commitment to enhancing gas penetration in Northern Nigeria. He explained that NCDMB’s equity partnership with the company was driven by its “bankable” business plan to boost LPG access and contribute to local content development.
Ogbe also highlighted the project’s broader impact, including job creation. He noted that over 200 Nigerians had already found employment at the Kaduna facility, with further opportunities expected as the plants expand. The project aligns with the Nigerian government’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2026 and supports the transition to cleaner cooking fuels, reducing the reliance on kerosene and firewood.
Butane Energy’s Chairman, Isa Inuwa Muhammed, expressed gratitude to NCDMB for its support, emphasising that the partnership between the two organisations is based on trust and shared vision. He noted that Butane Energy, established in 2017, has built significant distribution assets across Northern Nigeria and is committed to making LPG available to all parts of the region.
The new LPG filling plant in Kaduna is part of NCDMB’s strategy to invest in third-party projects that foster local capacity development, reduce reliance on traditional fuels, and contribute to Nigeria’s sustainable, greener future.
