NERC asks Nigerians to submit suggestions for metering
- Reviews dual metering plans
- Considers a third option for metering optimization
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has asked Nigerians to submit their proposals on a pathway for metering optimisation. The Commission is seeking to manage and increase metering impact with the implementation of the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) and National Mass Metering Program (NMMP) metering policies.
The Commission following the release of a consultation paper on metering has asked the public to choose between three different options for the current metering policy implementation. Option 1 involves running the MAP and NMMP together. A customer using this option will not pay seperately for a meter. The meter charge will be in form of the energy charge being billed to the customer. Under Option 2, NERC will merge the MAP with the NMMP while meters procured under the NMMP will be delivered by the licensed MAP participants. The third option will involve shutting down the MAP to fully implement the NMMP metering policy.
NERC is seeking the help of Nigerians in determining which of the options to go with.
Hello there Ada,
Heaps of thanks for your efforts in the sector. Unfortunately, most suggestions, Comments, opinions and inputs in Nigeria are not always acknowledged, especially when it doesn’t favour them.
Nevertheless ma, option 2 will be more preferable, since NERC has licensed the MAPs for bring pre-paid meters into Nigeria, then those who have the capacity should be encouraged. Some licensed MAPs have thousands ofthis meters in Nigeria but no Discos is collecting them because of beaurcracy and NERC is not helping out. I will suggest that NERC manage the licensed MAPs with NMMP and let the meters delivered by MAPs be collected by NERC or order the Discos to buy the off. Thank you for the opportunity.
Hello Banjoko, thank you for your comment. We at TEH regularly send public suggestions and comments to the appropriate authorities. Thank you for this information, we will be sure to pass it on to NERC.
