- Neste will supply Air Canada with 77.6 million litres of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) starting in December 2024 to reduce carbon emissions.
- The SAF will be delivered to Vancouver’s marine terminal and directly linked to Vancouver International Airport for efficient distribution.
- The agreement supports Air Canada’s sustainability goals, with the goal that SAF account for 1% of its fuel consumption by 2025.
Neste has signed an agreement with Air Canada to provide 77.6 million litres of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The deal will help Air Canada reduce carbon emissions and meet its sustainability goals.
Neste will deliver the SAF, blended with conventional jet fuel, to Vancouver’s marine terminal starting in December. Shipments will continue throughout 2025. The Vancouver terminal connects directly to Vancouver International Airport, ensuring efficient fuel delivery.
This agreement expands the existing partnership between the two companies. It supports Air Canada’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The airline plans to use SAF for 1% of its estimated jet fuel consumption in 2025. In 2023, Nestle supplied SAF to Air Canada at San Francisco International Airport and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Michael Rousseau, President and CEO of Air Canada, emphasised the importance of SAF in reducing the airline’s environmental impact. “SAF plays a key role in our efforts to reduce GHG emissions,” he said. “This purchase supports our goal of procuring SAF for 1% of our fuel use by 2025.”
Carl Nyberg, Executive Vice President at Nestle, expressed pride in expanding the partnership with Air Canada. “This marks the first time we supply SAF to Canada,” Nyberg said. “It highlights our commitment to helping the Canadian aviation industry reduce emissions.”
Nyberg also pointed to the critical role of policy support in increasing SAF usage. “Policy support can accelerate SAF adoption,” he said. “We look forward to continuing our work with Air Canada on this important initiative.”
The agreement between Nestle and Air Canada reflects the growing focus on sustainable aviation practices. The partnership represents a step toward reducing air travel’s environmental impact, a primary global emissions source. SAF is a crucial solution for the aviation industry to meet its emission reduction targets.
Air Canada has made significant progress in its sustainability efforts. The airline has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and has explored various ways to reduce its carbon footprint. SAF plays a vital role in these efforts, offering a lower-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuel.
Nestle produces SAF from renewable waste and residue materials, making it a more sustainable option than fossil-based jet fuel. By replacing conventional jet fuel with SAF, airlines can significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
The deal with Air Canada forms part of Nestle’s broader strategy to increase SAF production and supply to global aviation markets. Nestle is one of the leading producers of SAF and focuses on expanding its production capacity to meet the growing demand for sustainable aviation solutions.
Both companies recognise the importance of collaboration between industry leaders, governments, and stakeholders in driving the transition to more sustainable aviation practices. With continued investment and policy support, SAF could become a significant solution for reducing emissions in the aviation sector.
Neste and Air Canada’s expanded partnership marks a significant milestone in the transition to greener aviation. The supply of SAF to Vancouver International Airport showcases how aviation companies are actively working to reduce their environmental impact and create a more sustainable future for the industry.
