The newly appointed Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, said that he is “very confident” that there will be an end to load shedding and an energy action plan with timelines in place. Ramokgopa was sworn in on Tuesday as a minister. Shortly after Chief Justice Raymond Zondo swore him in at Tuynhuys in Cape Town, he spoke to the media.
Ramokgopa told the media, “I know that there is an appetite that is justified from our people; they want to know when load shedding will end. We will be honest and transparent with the South African people about our ability to address this.”
According to the EskomSePush app, there were 81 days of load shedding in 2022. This means South Africans were in darkness for over 20% of the year. According to Eskom’s integrated annual reports detailing its energy availability factor (EAF), there’s been a steady decline in energy available. Analytics show that Eskom’s EAF fell by about 20% over a decade between 2013 and 2022.
