Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) announced the completion of the 83MW Olkaria I, Additional Unit (AU) 6 Geothermal Power Plant in a press release, kicking off plans to connect it to the national grid.

This achievement comes after the successful delivery of full steam to the power plant, which started the technical steps that will lead to commercial operation in June 2022. This is a win-win situation for Kenyans, first in climate action. After all, geothermal is renewable and second in terms of reliability and affordability because geothermal will inevitably supplant more expensive energy sources.

Rebecca Miano, KenGen’s Managing Director and CEO, praised the achievement as a significant step toward the country’s goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2030, which she said will assure a reliable supply of clean electricity to promote Kenya’s economic development. “The development of Olkaria I Unit 6 is in line with the company’s long-term strategy and Kenya’s Least Cost Power Development Plan (LCPDP) focusing on long-term renewable energy supply in support of the government’s Big Four Agenda,” she said.

KenGen’s Managing Director and CEO, Rebecca Miano, commended the achievement as a significant step toward Kenya’s objective of using 100% renewable energy by 2030, which she said will ensure a reliable supply of clean electricity to help the country thrive economically.
