New Mexico is set to resume normal electricity billing following the moratorium on electricity billing during the pandemic. New Mexico’s Public Regulation Commission prevented electricity utilities from disconnecting consumers service over unpaid bills during much of the pandemic. The moratorium ended in May; however, a 90-day transition period was issued.
Over 47,000 residential customers of Public Service Co. of New Mexico have an average outstanding bill of $448 for electricity. As a result, the utilities have urged customers who have debt arrears to make payments to the respective utility. Public Service Co. is the largest provider of electricity in New Mexico.
In collaboration with some utilities, the state has provided assistance for people who need help paying their bills.
